History

History of the Sunday School goes back to the year 1865 but records do not mention much about its early activities. However there is evidence that the years 1907/1908 Ms Susan de Alwis, Meraya de Alwis and Hariet de Alwis have conducted a Sundays School. There after Mr. Robert de Alwis and Ms. Grace Peiris have been the managers of Sunday school for periods of 16 and 13 years respectively. In the recent history, Chitra Samarasinghe and Tania Dharmasena have been its superintendents for almost 14 years and 10 years respectively. During these long years, prize givings, outings and excursions have been organized. And participated in many all island Bible quiz competitions with Hendala Sunday school winning on many occasions.

Sunday School at present

The Sunday School continues to grow under the leadership of a superintendent and five set of dedicated teachers with approximately fifty children on the roll call. While they learn the Word of God and sing learn choruses, they also have the opportunity to develop their talents and share God’ love among them. They study the syllabus set by Sunday School committee of the Sri Lank Baptist Sangamaya and sits for the annual examination conducted by them.

The children take part in Sunday services at special occasions and enjoy and look forward to the annual Christmas party and the Santa Clause who comes with gifts for them. They enjoy and look forward to come to Sunday School each Sunday and is a great blessing to the church and their families.
